Please Don't Throw Sticks For Dogs

Please don't throw sticks for dogs.

Recently, we have had a spate of serious injuries caused by sticks. Owners throw sticks for their dogs. The dogs chase after them but they catch the stick as it is bouncing on the ground. One end of the stick jams into the ground, while the other is rammed into the back of the mouth causing untold damage.

Fortunately, this year we haven't had any fatalities, but there are some major blood vessels at the back of the throat and it is only a matter of time before an unfortunate dog has a stick puncture a major artery and bleeds to death before they can be brought to us.

If you want to throw things for your dog to chase, use a suitably sized ball (not too small as this could get wedged in the back of the throat - something that also happened recently) or a rubber Kong toy. These are far safer.
