We were recently involved in a case where a holidaymaker had found a baby hedgehog next to its dead mother alongside a road in France. They decided to look after the hoglet, but instead of handing it over to a French wildlife hospital, they smuggled the animal back into the UK, knowing full well it was illegal. The animal was eventually seized under the Rabies Order and would have been destroyed if a ministry vet hadn’t stepped in to pay the quarantine fees. Apart from the rabies risk, bringing hedgehogs illegally into the UK risks introducing other diseases into our already threatened hedgehog population. Utterly silly.
